2005 and 2006 rice season in Khumaltar. Four promising rice genotypes for mid- and high-hill conditions were agromorphologically
characterized along with two local varieties: Patle and Gudgud, and two standard checks of modern varieties:
Khumal-4 and Khumal-11. Altogether 14 different quantitative and 20 qualitative characters were observed at respective growth
stages of the rice plant following the ISTA Rules (2003) and standard rice descriptors (IRRI, 1980). A significant variability was
found for most quantitative traits (1.0 to 58.9% of CV) with two common .traits: two-clefted ligule and droopy panicle axis across the
genotypes under study. Variability was also observed in flag leaf angle with horizontal type in NR10492-7-22, Patle, erect in
NR10491-57-2-l, Khumal-11 and NR10515-69-1, and intermediate in rest of the genotypes; culm angle with intermediate and/or
erect type in most the genotypes and open in Patle. Likewise, strong to intermediate culm strength was found in six genotypes and
weak in Khumal-4 and Patle. Intermediate type of panicle was found in only two locallandraces with high sterility in Gudgud and
partial sterility in Patlc:: Thus, these promising genotypes were different from each other and can be easily identified based on these

hectare from 60 meter in terai to 3050 meter above sea level in high hill Jumla with the
productivity of 3.13 tlha. About 4.46% of the total rice land falls within high hill where
cold injury due to low air temperature is the major constraint in the rice production. An
attempt was made to develop cold tolerant and high yielding rive genotypes for this region
by conducting on station and on farm rice varietal research. On station research were
conducted at ARS Jumla and Khumaltar late planting condition involving 10-12 rice
genotypes during 2009-2012 in randomized complete block design (RCBD). Four
promising lines were evaluated in the farmer's field as on farm trial in OR sites of ARS
Jumla, and ARS Pakhribas during 2009-2012. These lines were compared with standard
check variety Chandannath-3. Among them NR10479-B-33-2-1-1 and NR10482-B-10-3-2-
2 were found promising and preferred by farmers due to its stable high yield over
Chandannath-3 in tested locations. Release and wider dissemination of these genotypes will
help to uplift the livelihood of high hill farmers' and help to reduce the problem of food

1.12 metric tons/ ha. respectively. Limited availability of improved varieties is one of the
prime reason for low average productivity of finger millet in Nepal. With the view to
identify superior genotypes for river basin areas of mid-western hill, various genotypes
obtained from Hill Crop Research Program. Kavre, Dolakba, were tested at Agriculture
Research Station, Dasarathpur,Surkhet and its outreach sites, during 2011 and 2012. In on
station trial the genotypes were highly significant for days to SO% panicle emergence and
days to 75% maturity. Significant difference was also observed for grain yield, number of
finger per plant, and lodging, while genotypes were significantly not different for straw
yield, plant height, and thousand seed weight. Based on the combined result of2011 and
2012, genotype ACC#2827-1 (2361 Kglha.) was found top grain yielder followed by
ACC#2324-1(2044Kglha.) and Local Check (1553Kg/ha.). In farmers' field and mother
trials the genotypes were highly significant for grain yield. Under ·these trials, genotype

Abstract: 180 and 219 millet genotypes obtained from different source were evaluated under field condition at Kabre and Pokhara to find out sources of resistance toblast disease respectively for consecutive two years 2003 and 2004. Maximumnumber of.fingermillet cultivars 154 at Kabre and 106 at Pokhara were resistant to blast disease. Among them ·millet genotypes such as KLE-118, KLE-123, KLE-159, KLE-176, KLE-277, GE-498, GE-509, GE-517, GE-518, GE-519 & GE-521 were recorded upto resistant to FB & NB at both locations and agronomically superior that might be used in breeding programme to develop new millet varieties of desired characters and some of them could be recommended for general cultivation.
