The community was deprived of traditional agricultural land, skill, job and income in early 1960s. Thus, most of them had a nomadic life traveling from lake, rivers and wetlands carrying a cast net for fishing to feed their family till 15-20 years back …………

Title : Rice gene pool for mid and high hills and its conservation in Nepal Material Type: printed text Authors: B.K. Joshi, Author Pagination: 252-264 p. Languages : English (eng) Keywords: Ancestor, conservation, landrace, Nepalese rice cultivar, gene pool Abstract: Study on crop gene pool helps to develop varieties, to know the potential sources for breeding materials, to develop strategy for sustainable use and conservation and to know the richness in crop genetic resources of particular country. Individual farmers value diversity within and between their crops because of heterogeneous soils and production conditions, risk factors, market demand, consumption and uses of different products from an individual crop species. Both the potential for long term genetic gain and the reduction of genetic vulnerability may depend on the genetic diversity present in the genetic base…….

Title : Red Listing of Agricultural Crop Species, Varieties and Landraces Material Type: printed text Authors: Joshi, Bal K., Author ; ,Upadhyay, Madhusudan, Author ; Gauchan, Devendra, Author ; Sthapit, Bhuwan R., Author ; Joshi, K.D., Author Publication Date: 2004 Article on page: 73-79 p General note: Review article Languages : English (eng) Keywords: Agricultural crops, conservation, on farm, red list category, red-listing criteria Abstract: Red listing mechanism has been developed for wild fauna and flora. There are several
documents illustrating red listed wild fauna and flora. But there is a lack of information on the
red list and red listing criteria of agricultural crop species, varieties or landraces. For initiating
on- farm, in situ and ex situ conservations, red listing is helpful in locating region of crop
species, varieties or landraces diversity. The paper reviewed the red listing criteria used for the
categorization of wild fauna and flora. Categorization of on-farm crop species, varieties and
landraces is based on population, ecological, social, modernization and use criteria. Among
them ecological, social and modernization criteria are useful in selecting location for sampling
materials for ex situ conservation and appropriate sites for in situ conservation. Modernization
and use criteria are suitable for categorization of crop genotypes. Combinations of these criteria
are proposed for red listing crop genotypes and areas.Link for e-copy: http://elibrary.narc.gov.np/?r=84

Title : Socioeconomic and Agroecological Determinants of Conserving Diversity On-farm: The Case of Rice Genetic Resources in Nepal Material Type: printed text Authors: Gauchan, Devendra, Author ; Melinda Smale, Author ; Maxted, N., Author Publication Date: 2005 Article on page: 89-98 p Languages : English (eng) Keywords: Diversity indices, dominance, evenness, on-farm conservation, rice diversity, richness Abstract: Conservation of crop genetic resources presents a challenge of identifying specific determinants
driving maintenance of diversity at farm and agroecosystems. The objectives of this study were to
identify socioeconomic, market and agroecological determinants of farmers’ maintenance of rice
diversity at the household level and derive implications for policies in designing on-farm
conservation programs. We assess spatial rice diversity at farm level using household survey
data. A household decision making model is conceptualised using microeconomic theory to assess
and identify factors influencing on-farm rice diversity. The model is then tested econometrically by
using various factors affecting farmers’ variety choice and diversity decisions. The findings show
that household-specific socioeconomic, agroecological and market factors are important in
determining on-farm rice diversity. The significant variables in explaining richness and evenness of
rice diversity include distance to the nearest market, subsistence ratio, modern variety sold, land
types and adult labour working in agriculture. The statistical signs of the factors determining rice
diversity are consistent in explaining the richness, dominance and evenness among rice varieties.
Finally, the study implies that the cost-effective means of promoting and sustaining on-farm
conservation programmes is to target them in market isolated geographic locations of high crop
diversity where farm households have more heterogeneity of agroecological conditions and more
active family adult labour working on-farm.Link for e-copy: http://elibrary.narc.gov.np/?r=67

Title : Value addition through product diversification in fingermillet: a experiences from kaski site, nepal Material Type: printed text Authors: Sanjaya Gyawali ; Bharat Bhandari, Author ; Subedi, Anil, Author ; Deepak K Rijal, Author Publication Date: 2005 Pagination: 70-77 p. Languages : English (eng) Keywords: Finger millet value addition , private entrepreneurs, landrace conservation, public awareness Abstract: Ll-B!RD in partneship with of private entrepreneurs initiated value addition through product diversification and marker promotion in one of the socially neglected but nutritionally rich food crop: finger millet in Pokhara Nepal. The local interdisciplinary· team identified working modality through participatoryworkshops involving private entrepreneurs such as Madhav's cafe, Shital Agro-products as well as public sectors such as regional food laboratory, agriculture extension and academic institutions. A few popular value added products developed, include millet Bread, Cookies, Rolls, roasted .Millet based flour (Knophe) and Namkin. These products were targeted to a wide range of consumers: intellectual, diabet ics, and young generation people in urban areas. Similarly, twenty one women farmers from seven rural and peri-urban villages were trained to develop resource person for diversifying millet foods like Namkin , Haluwa,Malpuwa, Selroti etc. suitable for household preparations. These millet products were demonstrated in local fairs and festivals and other special occasions like world food day to collect consumers' feedback, raise awareness as well as promoting in the market. In response to these initiatives, some private entrepreneurs such as Annapuma Pouroti Udgyog, Sital Agro product and Kundhar Khaja Udyog have entered into commercial production and marketing of finger millet based products in Pokhara.
