Title : Strategies and alternative approaches for future growth of the livestock sector in Nepal Material Type: printed text Authors: Surya B.S ; , Publisher: Kathmandu : Nepal Animal Science Association (NASA) Publication Date: 1997 Pagination: 1-14 .p Keywords: Animal production; Pasture; Feed crops; nutrition; breeding; Fisheries; Livestock Abstract: The significance of livestock sector in the national economy cannot be over-emphasized when it contributes to about one-third of the Agricultural Gross Domestic Product (AGDP). The target of the Agriculture Perspective Plan to increase the overall agricultural growth rate from 2.96% in 1995 to 4.76% in 2014/15 relies heavily on the actual growth rate to be achieved in the livestock sector (increasing the growth rate from 2.89% in 1995 to 6.1% during 2014/15).The growth of the livestock sector has been seriously afflicted due to lack of appropriatestrategies and well-defined objectives. To significantly increase the contribution of the livestock sector to Agricultural Domestic Product (AGDP), dairying should followlocational strategies: (i) the high hills focuses for production and marketing of exportquality yak/chauri cheese, (ii) the mid hills focuses on "Kanchan Cheese" production forboth export and local market; and (iii) the terai focuses on production and marketing of dairy products for mainly domestic market. To further strengthen the livestock production and marketing, the national research systemshould support the extension system first of all by understanding the immediate problems of the farmers and then working seriously by allocating additional resources and/or reallocating available resources to solve the actual problems.
