Abstract: |
With the objectives of documenting horto-morphological characteristics and evaluating the performance of onion .(Allium cepa L.) landraces t,mder Chitwan condition, a study was carried out during 2006-2007. The experiment was laid_ out jn ·a Randomized. - Complete Block Design (RCBD) Which COJ?Sisted of nine entries of onion as treatments ;_ · (six landraces and three common cultivars} replicated thrice. The study revealed significant variation in plant height, yield and quality attributes . of differerir landraces and common cultivars of onion. Dapcha Local seemed as on~ of the -earliest maturing .land race. The difference in neck .thickness was not significant among the /andraces and cultivars._ Landraces .showed more bulb splitting while it was the least in Lucifer. Nona-· of the landraces bolted where as it was the highest (2:23%) in N-53 followed by Lucifer (0.71%). Nuwakote Local contained the highest amount -of dry matter followed by Red Creole and Dapcha Local. TSS was the highest in Red Creole (13.8~8) which was statistically at par with Nuwakote Local, Dapcha Local, N-53 and Doti Locai. Though Red Creole was the highest yielder. yield potential of the /ocallandraces like Doti Local Dapcha Local and Dadeldhura Locar was equally ·encouraging: Majority of _the . · landraces possessed special quality characteristics such as higher TSS and dry matter . content as well. as non-bolting characteristics. Thus, _-fitJ.g(,ngs of the present st~dy revealed that it is high tim_e for conseNation~ impro~ement 8.l_d:f?'£f?f!'-Otion .of landraces · of onion available in the country through location specific trials~·ft@r respe_ctive native_ ... places as well as other suitabte pockets in the country. |
