The productivity is very low (about 10 mt/ha) as compared to 20-25 mtlha world average. It is mainly due to the traditional methods of cultivation, use of seedlings as planting materials, wide spread of graft transmi~sible diseases such as Huanglongbing and other viral diseases and infestation of most devastating fungal. diseases like Phytophthora. Production of grafted saplings of good quality and supply to the farmers are the prerequisites to increase the productivity of citrus. The project was started in 2005 with the construction of well managed two screen houses (20x9x3 .m3 in size) in Banepa for production and distribution of disease free planting materials in Nepal. The project applied the achievements made by the other institutions. Mandarins access no. J-90 selected based on the 5 y~ars evaluation by National Citrus Research program and confirmed HLB free in PCR test by NAST, has been used for mother plant. The screen with 10 mess was usee! in the screen .house which did not allow entrance of any insects including aphids and -psyllids .a,n.d avoid- the chances of infection of nursery plants by any type of vector transmissible disea~es. Seventy mother plants are being maintained in thE! screen house. The screen houses had the capacity of producing 10 thousand grafted citrus saplings annually. Good quality citrus saplings were produced within a year due to enhanced growth of plants inside screen house.
