Coffee (Coffea spp), is an important cash generative stimulant drink crop after tea in Nepal.
However there is a limited study on existing status of farmers level coffee production in
westem hills of Nepal. An evaluation of famlers' level coffee production was carried out at
Palpa, Gulmi, Kaski and Syangja districts to identify the famlers practices on the
improvement of the coffee production in 2003. Purposive sampling was used to collect the
information. Results from the study described that farmers are generating more than NRs.
160,000 per hectare. Most of the farmers are poorly guided for the plantation of coffee in its
technical base. Coffee plantation utilizes unproductive fallow land and shady area. It also
helps to conserve soil erosion and provide friendly environment condition. Most of the
fanners do not grade their cherry which ultimately spoil the quality of coffee. If they were not
able to sale dry cherry within the production period, they store them more than two years,
which also deteriorate the quality of processed product. Most of the farmers established new
coffee orchard by uprooting seedlings, which germinated near old plants. Results showed that
there is lack of proper knowledge of suitable varieties, grading systems, manuring, irrigation,
proper training, pruning operation, and disease managemellf. However, organic fanning is
common practices in fanners' level of surveyed area. |
