Section under takt•s activities such as distribution of clean seed, dissemination of new
technologies and training. For the promotion of potato cultivation, tec:luwlogy like True
Potato Seed (TPS) and Pre-Basic Seed (PBS) uue brought in as early as in 1978 and 1987
respectively to suffice the clean seed requirement in the coumry. During Ninth Fi\•e- Year Plan
special attention was giren for tire production of TPS to cater tire increasing demand and
gradually cut dmmtlre importation ofTPS. Thus, capacity of Horticulture Center Sarlalii and
Nucleus Seed Potato Center, Nigaley, were strenxthened for tlrat objecth•e. A package of
practices for xrml'ing potato tlrrough TPS \\'liS developed through participatOI)' technology
\'erijication demonstration and which promoted farmers' adoption le1'el within short span of
time. Now, TPS is utilized for seed as well as ware potato production at commercial scale.
For the judicious use of inputs and appropriate management practices, Integrated Crop
Management through Farmer Field School (ICMIFFS) approac:/r has been conducted in tire
major potalo growing areas as co/laboralive program !Jetween PDS and institutions like CJ PUPWARD

was conducted in 2063 and 2064 in the eastern mountains. The field survey was
carried out in major fruit growing areas of Dhankuta districts such as Muga, Fa/ate and
Be/ahara and important fruit markets of eastern hills such as Dharan, Birtamod,
Damak, Charali and Indian market in Siliguri. Thirty each fruit growers, wholesalers and
retailers were inteNiewed· with a pre tested set of questionnaires .. The data obtained
were analyzed in "Statistical Package for the Social Sciences". The study showed that
less than five percent respondimts are familiar with post haNest management practices
and more than 25 percent post haNest loss is due to disease and insects and the loss
is even higher due to anthracnose in mango and stalk rot in banana. The market study
showed void in fruit production and demand which in major is fulfilled from Indian fruits ·
