Abstract: |
An attempt was made to explore the status of using locally made bio-pesticides to manage insect pests in crops in three Village Development Committees (VDCs), Hatiya, Amalachur and Amarbhumi, of Baglung district in Nepal from July to September 2010. A total of randomly selected 75 farmers, comprising of 25 households from each VDC, were purposively interviewed using questionaires. Informal group discussion, expert interview and field observation were also conducted to collect necessary information. Survey results showed that crop pests were the main problem of crop production as expressed by about 53% respondents. Aphids (Brevicoryne brassicae) and cabbage butterflies (Pieris spp.) in cauliflower and tomato fruit worm (Helicoverpa armigera) and white fly (Bemisia tabaci) in tomato were considered to be major insect pests in the area. Use of home-made bio-pesticides (Gitimal) was very common in vegetable crops as expressed by 88% of the respondents………………………….. |
