Abstract: |
Crop sector in agriculture has dominant role contributing 50% of agriculture gross domestic product (AGDP) in the national economy. Rice, wheat, grain legumes and industrial crops are dominant in the terai (southern plain) whereas maize, millets and barley in the hills. Compared to the average of base years (1990-1992) with the average of recent three years (2008-2010) the increase in production in rice, maize and wheat was 40, 57 and 97%, respectively. Among several other factors, the technology must have had significant role in the increase. However, this increase is below the expectation given by Agriculture Perspective Plan (1995-2015). A total of 191 crop varieties have been released with package of practices for various production domains. The varieties were mostly identified to have the tolerance for biotic and abiotic stresses of concerned crops with the increased yield in the existing cropping systems compared to the farmers' varieties……………... |
