Abstract: |
International Rice Research Institute (IR.RI) and Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC)/Department of Agriculture (DoA) have a long history (nearly 50 years) of collaboration on rice research and development. Formal collaboration between IRRI and Nepal was initiated from the beginning of2005 by establishing IRRI-Nepal Country Office. IRRI-Nepal Office coordinates and facilitates different research and development activities with the help of different research centers of NARC, Institute of Agriculture and Animal Sciences (IAAS), National Seed Company (NSC) and other non-government organizations (NGOs), who are directly involved in rice research and development. IRRI-Nepal Office has been facilitating by bringing different drought tolerant, submergence tolerant as well as upland and lowland rice varieties from IRRI. Among the drought tolerant rice varieties, three (Sukha Dhan 1, Sukha Dhan 2 and Sukha Dhan 3) have been released in Nepal in 15 May 2012 for drought areas. Similarly, two submergence tolerant rice varieties (Swama Subl and Sambha Mahsuri Subl) have been released in the same date for the shallow submergence areas. Other pipe line varieties such as Sukha-4, Sukha-5 and Sukha-6 arc in the process of release. Other rice and rice-based rice technologies are discussed for sustainable production. IRRI bas been supporting to multiply seeds of drought and submergence rice varieties as well as disseminating them in different parts of Nepal by involving different Stakeholders. IRRI is also supporting for the establishment of Seed-Net in Nepal. The technical capability of NARC and IAAS Scientists have been strengthened through various long-term and short-term trainings, attending various consortium meetings and time to time visits of IRRI and Nepalese scientists. This has helped quality research in · Nepal. |
