Tori  (Brassica  rapa  syn. Brassica campestris var. toria) is the most important oilseed crop of Nepal which oceupies about 85 %  of the total oilcrops area. Varietal Improvement has been carried om since National Oilseed Research Program (NORP)  came into  existence.  An  Observation Nursery was planted in 1998199 -1999/2000 at NORP with 24 lines.  Out of them Acc.# 6761 produced highest mean seed yield of 681 kg/ha followed by ACC # 6076 (659 kg/ha) and ACC#6764 (653kg/ha).  In Initial Evaluation Trial  (IET),  highest  mean  seed yield  was produced  by ACC#5738  (825 kg/ha)followedby Surkhet local-B (799 kg/ha)  and ACC# 5692 (797 kg/ha), Over the  locations  and years  (1998/99-1999/2000)  seed yield  results  in coordinated varietal trial showed the variety M-27 as highest yield with 873 kg/hafollowedbyICT-8257(855  kg/ha)  and ICT-9137(811 kg/ha).  While the  check  variety  Pragati produced  mean  seed yield  of 776  kg/ha.  In coordinatedfarmers field trial (CFFT),Surkhet local recorded highest mean seed yield (722 kg/ha)  in Surkhet  condition and Pragati performed  well in Nepalgunj  and  Parwanipur  conditions  and  PT-30  and M-27 performed better in Sarlahi condition.

In OBN, Morang-2, Samiti local and Slzankarpur yellow produced seed yield of 498 kg/ha, 420 kg/ha and 382 kg/ha,respectively. In JET, ICS-9108 produced highest seed yield  of 524 kg/ha followed by ECS-9138-1 (476 kg/ha). In CVT, S-4 produced highest seed yield of 419 kg/ha followed by Sarlahi local (389 kg/ha). In Observation Nursery,Sarlahilocal recorded highest mean seed yield of 2160 kg/ha followed by ACC#99-001(1394 kg/ha), ACC#99-005(1350 kg/ha) and ACC#96-003(1145 kg/ha). In Initial Evaluation  Trial, over the years ACC# 96-008 recorded highest mean seed yield of 791 kg/ha. Plant pathological research  works  in rapeseed and mustard  was probably started during 1984/85  (BS 2041/42)  at National Oilseed Research Program Nawalpur,  Sarlahi with the deputation  of a plant protection officer on permanent basis.  Researches.on  rapeseed and mustard  diseases have been carried out at National Oilseed Research Program, Nawalpur with  over  all objectives of identifying  resistant  and tolerant  varieties for  major  diseases from  exotic  and  local  land  races. The  research  work  on  host  plant resistance,  seed pathology,  cultural  and  chemical  methods  of disease control have  been highlighted.  In addition,  survey,  surveillance,  and  estimation  of yields  loss  due to  diseases have  been carried out  to provide  basic information in devising integrated control strategies for the management of the diseases of economic importance. Altemaria blight in rapeseed and mustard  has  been  continued  to  be number  one  disease  and  identified  as  major yield limiting  constraint. During  last one-decade major research emphasis  has been placed on evaluation  of resistant germplasms of rapeseed & mustard against Alternaria blight and on chemical  method  of its control  Until now,  none  of varieties and germplasms  of tori and yellow sarson have shown resistance/tolerance to Alternaria blight over locations and years under  terai  and  inner  terai  environment.  However,  some  mustard  lines  have  shown moderately resistance to this disease. Untilvarieties resistant to Alternaria  blight would be available,  the  disease  control  strategy  would  depend  on  the  integrated  use  of early maturing  or disease escape and on chemical control methods  at large. Superiority  of tlze fungicide Rovral (Iprodion  50 WP) over Dithiocarbamates  in controlling Alternaria blight has been established.
