Abstract: |
Baruwal sheep are reared under a low input/low output migratory system of management. Its contribution to subsistence farming is high and the system fits well into the whole farming system adopted in the area. These animals ascend up to the alpine pasture in summer season, graze there for 3-4 months and then descend down to the village level when winter approaches, grazing stubbles and wasteland and fertilising the cultivated land in situ.During the movement, the animals suffer from different types of stress including winter nutritional stress. This trial was carried out in Siklis area on Baruwal ewes. The objective was to combat weight loss from nutritional stress by supplementing concentrate feed in winter. Thirty-four Baruwal ewes were randomly divided into two groups. One group was offered200 gm of concentrate feed per animal as a treatment and the other 17 ewes were notsupplemented It was found that the treatment group gained body weight by 0.2 kg +/- 0.49over a period of 18 weeks. The control group of ewes lost the body weight by 1.5 kg +/-0.58, over the same period. The difference was significant(p<0.01). Although, concentrate feeding to Baruwal ewes improved their body weight and maintainedcondition, due to many constraints, this feeding practice was not adopted in migratorysystem. |
