Abstract: |
An investigation was carried out in six Pakhribas breed of piglets to study the effect of stinging nettle ( Urtica dioica) feeding on health status and carcass quality. Six piglets of similar age group (3-4 months old) were divided into two groups: treatment and control, and each comprising two males and one female. Piglets of treatment group received 70 parts commercial feed and 30 parts Sisno (nettle) leaves (on wet matter basis) whereas the control group received only commercial feed for seven months period. All six animals were weighed and blood and fecal samples were collected at monthly intervals. At the end of the trial, four males (two from each group) of both treatment and control groups were slaughtered for qualitative and quantitative assessment of carcass. The trend of weight gain was higher in nettle fed group compared to control. Furthermore, protein and fat contents were higher in pork of treatment group compared to control. On sensory evaluation test, majority of the panel members liked the pork of treatment group. Furthermore, the remaining two females of the trial were kept in the farm as replacement stock; sows oftreatment and control groups had delivered l 0 and 7 piglets, respectively. |
